Greek Words for Love

We know that there are different kinds of “love.” We don't love God the same way we love pizza. We don't love our children the same way we love our spouses.

But in English, we only have one word, “love,” to describe all the different types of love.

However, in Koine (KOY-nay) (common) Greek, there are different words for the different kinds of love.

agapao (agg-uh-PAY-oh) (Greek – ἀγαπάω) (verb) the Greek word for: loving with agape (the love of God); loving with God's unconditional love; God loving us with His love and us loving God and one another with this same love.

agape (uh-GOPP-ay) (Greek – ἀγάπη) (noun) the Greek word for: the love of God; God's unconditional love; the love that God loves us with and the same love that we love God and one another with.

eros (AYR-ahs) (Greek – ἔρως) (noun) the Greek word for: sexual love; the sexual love between a husband and wife.

meraki (meh-RAKK-ee) (Greek – μεράκι) (adjective) the Greek word for: loving something or loving to do something. (e.g., “I love my cat.” or, “I love to play tennis.”)

philautia (fih-LAW-shee-uh) (Greek – φιλαυτία) (noun) the Greek word for: self-love; the love of one's self.

philautos (fill-OW-tahs) (Greek – φίλαυτος) (adjective) the Greek word for: self-loving; loving one's self.

phileo (fill-EH-oh) (Greek – φίλος) (verb) the Greek word for: loving with philia (brotherly love); loving brothers and sisters in Christ with brotherly love.

philia (FILL-ee-uh) (Greek – φιλία) (noun) the Greek word for: brotherly love; the love between brothers and sisters in Christ.

storge (STORR-jay) (Greek – στοργή) (noun) the Greek word for: familial love; the love between family members. (e.g., “I love my parents.” or, “I love my siblings.”)
